Introduction
In a heartwarming moment reminiscent of Brian Littrell’s surprise appearance two weeks prior, Carnie Wilson of Wilson Phillips fame joined her daughter’s American Idol audition, creating another touching family musical moment on the show.
Lola Sofia Bonfiglio, just 19, stepped into the audition room carrying an impressive musical lineage – her mother is Carnie Wilson of the iconic Wilson Phillips trio, and her grandfather is none other than Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson. The musical DNA runs deep in her veins.
Wilson Phillips, comprising Carnie Wilson, her sister Wendy, and Chyna Phillips (daughter of The Mamas & The Papas’ John and Michelle Phillips), dominated the early 90s with their debut album selling over 10 million copies. Their hits like “Hold On,” “Impulsive,” and “Release Me” cemented their place in music history as one of the greatest all-female groups ever.
When Lola entered with her father Rob, who was ready to accompany her on guitar, she surprised the judges by asking to bring in additional family members. The room fell silent as Carnie and Wendy Wilson walked in, leaving judge Carrie Underwood visibly starstruck and momentarily speechless.
The family treated the judges to an impromptu performance of “Hold On,” showcasing their natural harmonic blend. “Everybody’s just genetically designed to sound good together,” Carrie observed afterward.
For her solo audition, Lola performed Kacey Musgraves’ “Rainbow,” admitting to the camera that performing alone pushed her beyond her comfort zone. The judges were impressed by her pure tone, with Luke Bryan noting, “The tone and the pureness and the quality of your voice, that’s the perfect song for you.” He encouraged her to “belt too, and kind of let loose” as the competition progressed.
Carrie praised the honesty in Lola’s voice and presence, urging her to “own your talent and everything that you have to offer, because you have a lot to offer.”
With unanimous approval, the judges sent Lola to Hollywood, continuing her family’s musical journey into a new generation.
